Quick answer: If you are looking for a MacWhisper alternative, first decide which job you need. To transcribe finished audio and video files, or to dictate into any app, MacWhisper is strong and you may not need to switch. To record a meeting or lecture, read the words as people speak, then ask questions about what was said, on both Mac and iPhone, that is what Lyonesse does. Everything said about MacWhisper below comes from macwhisper.com, checked on 10 October 2026.
The short version
- Stay on MacWhisper if you transcribe lots of files, want a choice of Whisper models, or dictate into other apps.
- Look at Lyonesse if you want a searchable library of recordings you can question, the same on Mac and iPhone, with transcription on the device.
- Many people could reasonably use both, since they overlap less than the names suggest.
What MacWhisper does well
According to its site, MacWhisper transcribes mp3, wav, m4a, ogg, opus, mov and mp4 files with local models on your Mac, supports 100 languages, does batch transcription, takes YouTube and media URLs, and recognises speakers automatically. It records meetings from Zoom, Teams, Webex and others without a bot joining, and offers system-wide dictation. It exports to SRT, VTT, text, Markdown, PDF, HTML and Word.
It also lets you connect your own API keys for services such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Groq, and lists Ollama and LM Studio for local AI models. That cloud use is opt-in and uses your keys. The page says you can "process sensitive content locally without data ever leaving your Mac." So it is local by default, with cloud as your choice.
When to stay on MacWhisper
If your work is a pile of existing files, MacWhisper is the better fit. It supports far more languages than Lyonesse (100 against the 15 in our picker), more export formats, YouTube links, and dictation in any app. Lyonesse has no equivalent of those, and we won't pretend otherwise. If you already own it and it does what you need, keep it.
What Lyonesse does differently
Lyonesse is a workspace for the things you record and the documents you read. The parts that differ in practice:
- Live transcript. You read the words as people speak, rather than waiting for a file to process.
- Ask a question. Type something like "what did we decide about the budget?" and get an answer drawn from that recording, plus a summary in seconds.
- Search later. Find any moment across your library.
- Mac and iPhone. The same library on both. Record a room on your iPhone, review it on your Mac.
- On your device. Transcription, summaries, speaker labels and Q&A run locally, and Lyonesse has no servers of its own that store your recordings.

Price
Lyonesse costs $7.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 once (checked 7 October 2026). MacWhisper's site lists a free tier and MacWhisper Pro at 64 euros as a single payment with lifetime updates (checked 10 October 2026). Prices in the App Store can differ from the website, so look at the listing in your own country. If one-time payment matters to you, both apps offer one.
How to move
- Keep your MacWhisper exports. SRT and text files stay useful wherever you put them.
- For old audio you want in your library, our guide to transcribing an audio file on a Mac shows how to bring files in.
- For new meetings on a Mac, see transcribing an online meeting on a Mac. For rooms and lectures, record on your iPhone.
If you only want raw OpenAI Whisper without an app, see Lyonesse and Whisper. For the wider field, read best offline transcription apps and offline speech to text.
What you give up
- Most of the 100 languages MacWhisper lists.
- System-wide dictation into other apps.
- YouTube and URL transcription, and the wider export list.
- A very new OS requirement. Lyonesse needs iOS 26 or macOS 26.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lyonesse a MacWhisper replacement?
For some jobs. If you mostly transcribe finished audio and video files with a chosen Whisper model, or want system-wide dictation, MacWhisper is built for that and Lyonesse is not a swap. If you record meetings and lectures, want to read the words as they happen and ask questions about them afterwards, Lyonesse covers that.
Does Lyonesse work on iPhone?
Yes. Lyonesse runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and needs iOS 26 or macOS 26. MacWhisper's site lists an iOS and iPad version in its FAQ, but gives no details, so check its App Store page for what it does.
Does Lyonesse work offline?
Recording works offline. Transcription runs on your device for the languages Apple and Lyonesse process locally, such as English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese. The first time you use a language, the app may need to download a model. A few other languages need Apple's speech service, which can send audio to Apple's servers if you opt in, so check the privacy page before relying on offline for those.
Does MacWhisper send my audio to the cloud?
Its site says local models transcribe files on your Mac, and that you can connect your own API keys for services such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Groq if you choose to. So cloud use is opt-in, with your own keys. Lyonesse has no cloud option for transcription, summaries or questions beyond Apple's speech service for a few languages.
Can I move my MacWhisper transcripts into Lyonesse?
There is no importer. MacWhisper exports text, SRT, VTT, Markdown, PDF, HTML and Word files per its site, so you can keep those. Lyonesse can transcribe audio files and import documents, so original audio can be transcribed again if you want it in your library.
How many languages does Lyonesse support?
The language picker lists 15. MacWhisper says it supports 100 languages (macwhisper.com, checked 10 October 2026), so if you need an unusual language, MacWhisper has the wider list.
What does Lyonesse cost?
$7.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 once for lifetime access (checked 7 October 2026). MacWhisper lists a free tier and MacWhisper Pro at 64 euros once with lifetime updates (macwhisper.com, checked 10 October 2026). App Store prices for its apps differ, so check the listing.
