A Voicenotes Alternative for iPhone That Keeps Transcription on the Device

Voicenotes is popular and well reviewed. Here is what it does, where Lyonesse differs, and who should stay put.

Quick answer: If you want a Voicenotes alternative where transcription, summaries and questions run on your own iPhone and Mac, Lyonesse is one. If you need a web app, Windows or Android, or an Apple Watch app, stay on Voicenotes. Everything said about Voicenotes below comes from its App Store listing and homepage, read on 10 October 2026.

The short version

  • Stay on Voicenotes if you want a web app, Windows or Android, an Apple Watch app, or links you can share to Slack. Its homepage lists all of those.
  • Look at Lyonesse if you mostly record on an iPhone or Mac, want to ask questions about a recording, and want transcription done on the device.

What Voicenotes does well

Its App Store listing says "Record. Transcribe. Ask AI." and describes meeting recording, transcription in 100+ languages, summaries of long recordings and search across recordings. The latest version notes on the listing mention live transcription, dictation in any app and Action Button support (Voicenotes App Store listing, checked 10 October 2026). Its homepage says it is "Available on macOS, iOS, Windows, Android, Web & Watch" and supports "60+ languages with automatic detection" (voicenotes.com, checked 10 October 2026). The two pages give different language counts, so check which applies to you.

It has a large following too: 7.1K ratings at about 4.8 on the same listing. If it already works for you, there's no reason to move.

Where your words go

Voicenotes' homepage says "Nothing joins your call, nothing trains on your data, every word stays" and describes itself as "Private by design, SOC 2 Type II & GDPR Compliant" (voicenotes.com, checked 10 October 2026). Its App Store privacy label lists Audio Data, Email Address, Name and User ID as data linked to you, used for product personalization, and Device ID and Product Interaction as data linked to you, used for analytics and product personalization. It also lists Identifiers as data used to track you. Apple notes that the label is provided by the developer and is not verified by Apple (Voicenotes App Store listing, checked 10 October 2026).

Neither page says where the transcription itself runs, and neither mentions an offline mode, so we won't guess. If that matters to you, ask the developer or read its privacy policy before you decide.

Lyonesse is simpler to describe. Recording, transcription, summaries and questions run on your iPhone or Mac, and we don't run a server that stores your audio or transcripts. iCloud sync is on by default. It copies transcripts and summaries between your own devices through your Apple account, and audio never syncs. The privacy policy has the detail.

What Lyonesse does on the iPhone

You press record and the words appear as people speak. Afterwards you can ask a question about what was said, read a summary in seconds, see who said what with speaker labels, and search for any moment later. The same library is on your Mac. If you want a recorder first and a transcript second, our guide to a private voice recorder app covers that side, and offline meeting notes covers meetings.

What you give up

  • A web app. Lyonesse only runs on Apple devices, and needs iOS 26 or macOS 26.
  • Windows and Android apps.
  • An Apple Watch app that records. Voicenotes lists a Watch app. Lyonesse doesn't record from the Watch.
  • Dictation into other apps and sharing links to Slack, which Voicenotes lists.
  • Team features. Lyonesse is a personal workspace.
  • Fewer languages. Voicenotes claims 60+ or 100+, and Lyonesse's language picker offers 15.

Moving over

Keep Voicenotes until you've tried Lyonesse on a few real recordings. We haven't tested an export from Voicenotes, so look in its settings for what it offers and keep your originals. Lyonesse can transcribe audio files you already have, but there is no one-click import of a library.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lyonesse a Voicenotes replacement?

Only for some people. If you want transcripts, summaries and questions handled on your iPhone or Mac, it covers that. If you rely on Voicenotes' web app, Windows or Android apps, Apple Watch app or Slack sharing, it doesn't replace those.

Does Lyonesse work offline?

Recording works offline. Transcription runs on your device for the languages Apple and Lyonesse process locally, such as English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese. The language picker offers 15 languages in all. Norwegian and Turkish use Apple's own speech recognizer instead of the on-device model, so they are the exception to the on-device rule.

Can I import my Voicenotes into Lyonesse?

Not as a library. Lyonesse can transcribe audio files and import documents, but we haven't built or tested a Voicenotes importer. Check what Voicenotes lets you export and keep the originals.

Is Lyonesse free?

Lyonesse is free to download. $7.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 once for lifetime access (checked 7 October 2026). We don't currently list a free trial. Voicenotes is also listed as free with in-app purchases on the App Store (checked 10 October 2026).
