A Plaud Alternative for iPhone: Record and Transcribe With the Phone You Have

A clip-on recorder and a phone app do the same job in different ways. Here is the trade.

Quick answer: If you're looking for a Plaud alternative, the phone in your pocket is the cheapest one. Lyonesse records on your iPhone, shows the transcript as people speak, and lets you ask questions about what was said, with transcription and AI running on the device. If you need a wearable, a recorder for phone calls, or pickup across a big room, keep the Plaud. Plaud's plan prices, languages and privacy terms come from plaud.ai, and the device price and specs come from retailer listings and PCWorld, all checked on 10 October 2026.

The short version

  • Keep a Plaud if you record phone calls, want something you clip on and forget, or often sit far from the people talking.
  • Use your iPhone if you mostly record meetings, lectures and interviews you're sitting in, and you'd rather not buy a device or pay for transcription minutes.
  • Many people end up using both, a recorder for calls and the phone for everything else.

What Plaud does well

The Plaud Note is a thin card-sized recorder. Retailer listings and PCWorld put it at $159, with up to 30 hours of continuous recording and 64 GB of local storage (checked 10 October 2026). Plaud's site lists transcription in 112 languages with speaker labels, and a dual-mode setup for switching between phone call and in-person recording. The Plaud range also includes a wearable pin, which its site describes as hands-free capture.

That is a real advantage. A phone is busy with other things, runs a battery down in a day, and sits on the table face-up or in a pocket. A single-purpose recorder you can clip to a jacket doesn't compete with anything else for attention.

Where the audio goes

Plaud's privacy policy says it operates servers in the United States, Germany, Japan and Singapore, and stores your data on servers in the region matching your location. Recordings, transcripts and summaries live in a cloud account, and the policy says desktop recordings are uploaded there after recording ends. For AI features it says content is shared with LLM service providers, without naming them. It also says it will never use your content to train AI models unless you give explicit consent first. (plaud.ai privacy policy, checked 10 October 2026.) That is a clear policy, and some people will be fine with it. Others won't want meeting audio in someone else's cloud at all.

Lyonesse is built the other way round. Recording, transcription, summaries, speaker labels and questions run on your device, and there is no Lyonesse cloud that holds your recordings. In English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese the audio stays on the phone. Danish, Dutch and Swedish work the same way after you download an extra model. A language with no on-device model stays blocked until you switch on "Allow Apple servers for this language", and only then does audio in that language go to Apple. If you turn on iCloud sync, your transcripts and summaries sync to your own iCloud, not to us. The privacy policy has the detail.

What Lyonesse does on an iPhone

  • Live transcript. Read the words as people speak, not after you upload a file.
  • Speaker labels. Different voices are separated in the transcript.
  • Ask a question. Type "what did we decide about the deadline?" and get an answer drawn from that recording, plus a summary in seconds.
  • Search later. Find any moment across everything you've recorded.
  • Same library on Mac. Record on the phone, review on the computer.
  • Start fast. A Lock Screen widget, Control Center button and Action button can start a recording.

Price

The Plaud Note costs about $159 up front. Its Starter plan includes 300 transcription minutes a month at no charge. If you transcribe more than that, the Pro plan is $17.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed yearly, and Unlimited is $29.99 a month or $19.99 a month billed yearly. Lyonesse is $7.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 once, with no hardware to buy. If 300 minutes a month covers you, Plaud's running cost after the device is zero, so the saving is the $159 and, for heavier users, the plan.

What you give up

  • Phone call recording. Lyonesse doesn't record calls, and an incoming call interrupts a recording in progress.
  • A clip-on or wearable. Your phone has to be somewhere useful.
  • Pickup across a room. A phone microphone works best close to the speakers.
  • Languages. 15 against Plaud's 112.
  • Battery. Recording and live transcription use a phone battery faster than a recorder that does nothing else. Plug in for long sessions.

Tips that make a phone work as a recorder

  1. Put the phone on the table in the middle of the group, microphone end towards the speakers, not in a bag or pocket.
  2. Start the recording before people begin talking and glance at the live transcript for the first minute. If words are missing, move the phone closer.
  3. Test it once in airplane mode. If it records and transcribes there, you know nothing depends on a connection.
  4. Recording continues with the screen locked, but plug the phone in for anything over an hour.
  5. Lyonesse's audio session allows Bluetooth microphones. We haven't tested specific headsets for this article, so try yours before an important meeting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lyonesse a replacement for a Plaud recorder?

For sitting-down meetings, lectures and interviews, often yes, because the phone does the recording. For phone calls, all-day wearing, or capturing a room from across the table, no. A dedicated recorder is built for those and a phone is not.

Can Lyonesse record a phone call?

Not as a feature. Lyonesse records through the microphone, and a normal call on your iPhone interrupts a recording in progress. Plaud's site describes a dual-mode recorder with a phone call mode (plaud.ai, checked 10 October 2026), so if recording calls is the main job, keep a device built for it.

Does Lyonesse work offline?

Recording works offline. Transcription runs on your device for English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese, and for Danish, Dutch and Swedish once you download the extra model. The first time you use a language the app may need to download its model. A language with no on-device model stays blocked until you switch on Allow Apple servers for this language, and only then does audio in that language go to Apple. Try it in airplane mode before you rely on it.

Where does Plaud send my recordings?

Plaud's privacy policy says its apps keep recordings, transcripts and summaries in a cloud account on servers in the United States, Germany, Japan and Singapore, chosen by your region, and that content submitted to its AI features is shared with unnamed LLM service providers. It also says your content is never used to train AI models without your explicit consent (plaud.ai privacy policy, checked 10 October 2026). Lyonesse has no servers of its own that store your recordings.

How many languages does Lyonesse support compared with Plaud?

The language picker in Lyonesse lists 15. The Plaud Note page says it transcribes in 112 languages (plaud.ai, checked 10 October 2026), so for a less common language Plaud has the wider list.

What does Lyonesse cost compared with Plaud?

Lyonesse is $7.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $59.99 once (checked 7 October 2026). The Plaud Note sells for about $159 (retailer listings and PCWorld, checked 10 October 2026), and Plaud's plans include 300 transcription minutes a month free. More minutes need Pro at $17.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed yearly, or Unlimited at $29.99 a month or $19.99 a month billed yearly. Prices vary by country, so check checkout.
